Wren Launches New We Are Safety Site to Document Federal Attacks on Public Health and Safety
On March 18, the Wren Collective launched WeAreSafety.info. The website chronicles the administration’s attacks on public safety and its extreme use of crime fearmongering to justify invading cities, terrorizing immigrant families, and seizing power from local citizens.
The site is a clearinghouse for news, basic facts, and analysis on what we now all know to be true: the administration is not serious about public safety. Crime is a smokescreen for blatant power grabs and the administration and its allies are weaponizing it to justify surveillance, mass deportation, incarceration, and authoritarian control. All the while, policies that actually reduce crime are under constant attack: funding for proven violence prevention programs, housing, healthcare, food, lifesaving medical research, and mental health treatment.
The site features key facts, news, and Wren’s issue explainers on:
The dangerous budget cuts that create the conditions for crime:
Cuts to Federal Public Safety Programs: these reckless cuts eliminate proven, bipartisan community violence prevention programs that reduce crime
The War on Knowledge: cuts to vital medical research and public health infrastructure that puts us and our families in danger
Cuts to Our Social Safety Net: gutting healthcare for millions, mental health and substance use treatment, which is proven to drive crime rates higher
The use of crime as a flimsy pretext to seize power:
The Invasion of Cities: using crime as a flimsy pretext to wage costly invasions simply because local cities’ politics differ from those of the administration
Mass Deportation: a radical escalation of cruelty and vehicle for grift and corruption that American history will look back on with shame
The D.C. Takeover: a series of bills that could transform D.C.’s legal system into one of the most punitive and carceral systems in the nation, against the wishes of local residents
This site documents story after story of massive federal resources diverted away from public safety, vital programs that prevent crime, and into terrorizing residents in targeted cities to distract from a corrupt agenda that rewards actual crimes by political supporters and donors.
